THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN IGCSE AND SPM
WHAT DOES IGCSE REPRESENT?
‘International General Certificate of Secondary Education’ is an abbreviation for ‘International General Certificate of Secondary Education.’ Let’s take a look at several characteristics that are unique to IGCSE.
- Students in Malaysia take IGCSE between the ages of 14 and 17, depending on their primary 1 admission age.
- The test is widely recognized and highly regarded by prestigious colleges and businesses all around the world.
- It is adaptable, with students having the option of choosing from over 70 disciplines.
Students must complete an evaluation at the end of the course. A practical and coursework component, as well as a written and oral test, make up the evaluation.
WHAT DOES SPM REPRESENT?
The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, or ‘SPM,’ is a nationwide test for all form 5 pupils in Malaysian government schools that follow the education pathway.
SPM is one of the paths to university education, and it is taken after 11 years of schooling. Although all test papers (save the English paper) are written in Bahasa Malaysia, the exam is accepted in many countries.
THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN IGCSE & SPM
1. SUBJECTS
When it comes to courses, IGCSE provides pupils with more options than SPM. For example, there are no mandatory topics for anybody doing IGCSE.
In contrast, in order to receive their SPM credential, students must sit for and pass the Bahasa Malaysia and Sejarah (History) exams. Furthermore, Muslims must study Pendidikan Islam, whereas non-Muslims must study Pendidikan Moral.
Students pick their own subjects for IGCSE based on their interests.
2. GRADING SYSTEM
GRADING SYSTEM FOR SPM EXAMINATION
The results of the SPM test will indicate whether a student is eligible for post-secondary education, such as matriculation, foundation, certificate, or diploma programmes (with specialization).
A+, A, A-, B+, B, C+, C, D, E, and G are the grades.
Students planning to continue their study at a public university must convert their grades into a merit point system.
EXAMINATION GRADING SYSTEM FOR IGCSE
A*, A, B, C, D, E, F, or G are the grades.
It’s vital to remember that performance that falls below the lowest grade’s standard is ungraded and signified by a ‘U’. Furthermore, grades are not assigned according to a quota system.
Unlike SPM, which requires students to pass Bahasa Malaysia and History in order to receive a certificate, IGCSE applicants will receive a certificate listing the topics they studied and the grades they received.
3. DURATION
Fast-learning kids can take the test earlier and graduate from high school as early as 16 years old with IGCSE.
With SPM, all students must adhere to the year’s syllabus and go from form 1 to form 5 as directed. When students have completed 11 years of study, they sit for SPM.
4. RECOGNITION
Both the IGCSE and the SPM are equivalent examinations. Although both are well-known, the Cambridge IGCSE is the world’s most popular foreign secondary education degree.
Depending on your grades, both certifications can get you into good universities, pre-university programmes, diploma programmes, and so on. SPM, on the other hand, is the way to go if you want to attend a public university or join a Matrikulasi.
IGCSE, on the other hand, is the greatest option if you want to attend a local private institution or college, or perhaps study abroad.
